Victoria banned cash payments for scrap metal from 30 May 2018, and the law treats a motor vehicle sold as scrap, working or not, as scrap metal. Once the car is sold, VicRoads expects the seller to lodge a notice of disposal within 14 days, either online through myVicRoads or at a Customer Service Centre. Doing it promptly stops later tolls, parking fines and infringements arriving in your name. If the car is still registered, ask VicRoads about cancelling the registration so you can claim a refund for the unused time.
Before the pickup, gather your photo ID, the keys if you still have them, and the registration papers or other proof that you own the car. If finance may still be owing, talk to the lender first, because a car with money owed on it cannot simply be sold. Executors selling a car from a deceased estate will also need to show their authority to sell.
